FamilyEasy – Privacy policy

Last updated: [PLACEHOLDER: DATE]

FamilyEasy is a family meal-planning app (recipes, meal calendar and shared shopping list) published by [PLACEHOLDER: PUBLISHER NAME] ("we"). This page explains which data the app stores and why.

Data we store

How we use it

Only to provide the app and the website: to sign you in, to show your household's data to you and to the members of your household, and to keep it synchronised between your devices. Your name, email address and picture are visible to the other members of your household. We do not sell your data, use it for advertising, or share it with third parties.

Pictures and videos. The pictures and videos you add to a recipe are stored on our server and are visible to the members of your household. Videos are converted on our server (with the open-source tool ffmpeg) into a standard format, at most 720p, with a preview picture; the original file is deleted once converted, and an unfinished upload is deleted after 24 hours. When we store a picture or a video we remove its metadata, such as the GPS position and the camera details that phones record. The links the app and the website use to show them are private and expire after 12 hours. Files with identical content are stored once.

What is public. What you publish in the community space – your public name, your published recipes with their pictures and videos, and your comments – is visible to every user of the app, once an administrator has approved it (see below). Your email address, your Google display name and your household's own recipes are never shown there. When you import a recipe from a web site, our server downloads the page you named; nothing about you is sent to that site.

Review of publications. Every recipe you publish, and every update of a published recipe, is reviewed by an administrator before other users see it; until then only you see it (an update replaces the approved version only once it is approved). The administrator sees the recipe as you submitted it, with its pictures and videos, your public name and email address, and how many of your submissions were approved or rejected. You receive the decision by email (if the service sends emails), with the reason when your recipe is not accepted. Only approved versions are translated.

Translation. Published recipes are translated automatically into the other languages of the app so that every user can read them. The translation runs on a language model operated by us on our own servers; the recipe texts are not sent to a third party, and no personal data is part of what is translated.

Suggestions. Food preferences, yours and those of the profiles, are visible to the members of your household and are used only to suggest recipes and weekly menus to your household. Anyone can be added as a profile only by a member of the household; ask that member, or us, to correct or delete a profile at any time. Your own preferences are also visible to your friends and used for the meals they invite you to, unless you switch this off in your settings; the preferences of profiles are never shown to friends. Preferences are not shared with anyone else, and the community space never shows them.

Friends. Your friends see your name and picture from your Google account – never your email address – and, unless you switch it off, your food preferences. Someone becomes your friend only after you accept their request sent with your friend code, or after they accept yours. A recipe you send to a friend is a copy, with its pictures and videos and your message, visible only to that friend; it is deleted when you withdraw it, when the friendship ends, once your friend has saved or removed it (only what became of it is kept), and in any case 180 days after you sent it. A recipe your friend saves becomes part of their household's recipes and stays with them. Recipes sent between friends are private and are not reviewed by our administrators.

Tag suggestions. When a member of your household asks for it, the recipes concerned (title, ingredients and the beginning of the instructions) are sent to the same language model, operated by us on our own servers, which proposes tags and a country of origin. Nothing is changed until a member accepts the proposal. No personal data is part of what is sent.

Google Play. To verify a subscription and keep it up to date we send its purchase token to Google Play and receive its state. Google processes your purchase under its own privacy policy.

Moderation and support. Content reported by users is reviewed by a moderator, who can see the reported content, its author's public name, display name and email address, and the reasons given. The administrators of the service can see the list of accounts – email address, names, household, plan, sign-up date and last visit – to help users and to moderate the community space. Every change they make to the settings of the service is logged.

Emails

Invitations. When a member of your household invites someone by email, we send one email to the address that member entered, with the invitation code and a link to join. It names only your household and the member who invites. We use that address for nothing else, and send nothing more to it unless that person signs up.

Weekly menu. Only if you turn it on in your settings, we send you once a week the meals planned for your household for the following week and what is left on your shopping list. Every such email has a link to unsubscribe in one click, and you can turn it off at any time in your settings.

Emails are sent through [PLACEHOLDER: EMAIL PROVIDER OR OWN MAIL SERVER]. We send no newsletters and no advertising.

Website and cookies

The website uses one cookie, fe_session, which keeps you signed in. It is strictly necessary: it holds a random identifier, cannot be read by scripts, expires 30 days after your last visit and is deleted when you sign out. There are no tracking, analytics or advertising cookies. The website loads Google's sign-in button from Google, which processes your sign-in under its own privacy policy.

Where it is stored

On a server operated by [PLACEHOLDER: PUBLISHER NAME], located in [PLACEHOLDER: COUNTRY]. Data is transmitted over an encrypted connection (HTTPS).

Retention and deletion

Your data is kept for as long as your account exists. You can delete your account at any time from the app (Family → Delete account) or by contacting us; see how to delete your account. You can also export your data from the app. Deleting a recipe deletes its pictures and videos (copies published in the community, or saved by other families, are separate and stay with them). Deleting your account also deletes your public name, your published recipes with their pictures and videos and the versions waiting for review, your comments, likes, reports and blocks, your friend code, friendships, friend requests and the recipes you sent to friends or received from them, your food preferences, your settings, the emails we keep about you, and our record of your subscription (cancel the subscription itself in Google Play). The profiles of people without an account are deleted when a member deletes them, on request, or with the household when its last member leaves or deletes their account; your own preferences stay with your account when you leave a household. You can withdraw a published recipe or a comment at any time; see the community rules.

Your rights

Depending on where you live (for example under the EU GDPR) you have the right to access, correct, export and delete your personal data, and to lodge a complaint with your data-protection authority.

Children

FamilyEasy is not directed at children under 13 and requires a Google account to sign in.
